DC Day Trip: Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

On our way to Shenandoah National Park we stopped at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Ever since the museum appeared on the cover of The Washingtonian, I wanted to check it out. Located in Winchester, Virginia, it was a quick drive from DC. We didn’t tour the actual museum…instead we explored the surrounding grounds. We spent an hour or so making our way around the old mansion and through the many gardens. Next time I go, I would love bring a picnic and maybe pick up a bottle of wine from one of the Virginia wineries nearby.

If you aren’t up for a picnic, definitely check out the nearby Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery. The cozy restaurant is just minutes away from the museum and has delicious southern food.  We stopped there for a snack and picked up some biscuits and coleslaw. After looking at these gorgeous pictures of the cafe, I can’t wait to go back and basically order everything off the menu.

  1. We’re so glad you finally made it over to visit the MSV! We hope that next time you’ll be able to tour the Museum galleries. Our next changing exhibition “Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art” will be opening on September 7.

It’s also great to hear that you enjoyed the Bonnie Blue cafe down the street. Return visit tip, Bonnie Blue actually runs the cafe right in our Museum lobby too so you could easily have lunch right on our grounds! Though a picnic and a bottle of wine in the Gardens certainly sounds delightful too.

Happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit!
